Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum

more on music

Our weekly round-up of the weird and wonderful world of pop music...

In unsurprising news this week, a refreshed Amy Winehouse was asked to leave the Savoy Hotel bar after an impromptu and rowdy singsong upset guests and staff to boot. Seems a bit harsh – it was a free gig from a big star, for goodness’ sake – until you learn that she was accompanied by jazz pixie Jamie Cullum and show song-bellowing butterbean Michael Ball. Bravo, then.

On the rock ‘n’ roll side of the tracks, Kasabian’s Tom Meighan is continuing his desperate struggle to be described as “a bit like Liam Gallagher” by picking on My Chemical Romance, of all bands. MCR’s Gerard Way has called his bluff by challenging him to a “bullsh*t war”. Sounds messy, unhygienic and, frankly, a bit dull.

Baby Spice Emma Bunton has announced that she’s having a, well, baby. So, Posh has a few, Geri, Mel B and now Baby have followed suit. Just leaves Mel C. Any takers?

More warm and fluffy feelings come with the announcements that James, Jesus & Mary Chain AND Crowded House are all reforming. And the Police reunion story has gathered pace with rumours that they’ve booked a rehearsal studio in Vancouver and a massive vat of peroxide. Blimey. The Land of Pop won’t have room for new bands any more.

Particularly if they keep shooting themselves in the foot. Great white new rave hopes the Klaxons have admitted that they turned down the chance to be the first band to play the brand new Wembley Stadium, supporting Muse. They were drunk and now regret it, silly boys. Still, it’s not like the venue will be ready by then, is it? Little bit of politics there.
